Christmas light installation is basically the definition of seasonal business. For James Anderson, owner of Light Right, and his team, busy season means working 12 hour or more days, installing thousands of lines of Christmas lights across Vancouver Island and in Calgary, Alberta.
Efficiency is essential in order to maximize profits during this small window of time, so team schedules have to be tight to ensure no wasted time and to save on fuel costs.
Before Jobber, the last minute nature of installation booking meant that James was spending a lot of his time manually working on managing and modifying his crew’s schedule.
Once jobs were set and James joined his team installing lights on homes, office buildings, boats, and 60 ft tall trees, the hectic schedule meant that James left invoicing unattended until the season slowed down.
“There was a lot of room for errors in record keeping,” says James. “For instance what quotes needed follow up, what invoices had been sent, and which were overdue. Missing or erroneous information in each one of these areas could lead to lost profit.”
Having a program that summarizes my invoices and to-do’s so perfectly is indispensable. I no longer have to waste my time finding the missing invoice or payment at the end of the season because it’s already done for me.
Jobber quickly made tracking finances a much more organized process for Light Right. James especially likes the invoice dashboard, where every unpaid bill, every emailed quote, and every unsent invoice is summarized clearly, along with a dollar amount.
“Having a program that summarizes my invoices and to-do’s so perfectly is indispensable,” says James. “I no longer have to waste my time finding the missing invoice or payment at the end of the season because it’s already done for me.”
James noticed other efficiencies through using Jobber right away. He used to come home after a long day of installing only to spend more time scheduling and preparing information so teams knew where to go, when, and with what equipment.
Right away, James put Jobber’s route optimization feature to work, mapping out efficient groupings of jobs so that the team could reduce travel time in between jobs.
The team also has the Jobber app on their phones so each crew can see the full job details, map the property, and take specific notes on site. After a successful install they attach pictures of the final product to each job.
Light Right also uses Jobber to automate time tracking, with team members clocking in and out of jobs through the Jobber app.
“This definitely helps our bottom line as we can see how many hours were spent on each job,” says James. Recording this information through the app not only cuts down on time spent working on payroll, it also makes future quoting more accurate.
It really is an all-inclusive platform that helps Light Right install more Christmas Lights every year than anyone else on Vancouver Island.
James enjoys the installation process and being out in the field with his crews, and with Jobber he no longer finds himself tied to a physical office.
If he receives a call while in the field he can easily pull up the client information through the Jobber app on his phone in order to gain a better understanding of the call. He can add new clients requesting quotes, or quickly change something on an existing quote.
And as he makes these changes throughout the day, the most up to date information is instantly available to the rest of his team.
“Without Jobber, I honestly would not be able to manage my business as effectively. I would never have been able to expand as quickly as we have been, and with the same resources,” says James.
“Jobber essentially condenses a series of programs into one, reducing the amount of duplicate work, and eliminating the problems caused when different programs try to communicate. It really is an all-inclusive platform that helps Light Right install more Christmas Lights every year than anyone else on Vancouver Island.”
